THE 140-year-old home of the woman who was last week given an Asbo for her “reign of terror” has caused a splash after being painted bright pink.

The property in Marine Parade, Worthing, an old lifeboat house built in 1875, was painted by its inhabitants over the past week.

While the paint job has caused a stir among the neighbours, there was further drama yesterday when a 40-year-old woman was arrested for breaching her Asbo.

We reported last Saturday that Alexandra Capone, 40, had led a “reign of terror” over residents and businesses and had been handed an Asbo until 2017.

It is not clear if she was the person arrested.

Residents have spoken out about the pink paint, which acquaintances of Ms Capone said was intended to help sell sweets and ice cream for cancer.

Richie Redman, 48, of Upper High Street, Worthing, said the colour was “disgusting” and “completely out of character” with other buildings.

He said: “It wasn’t like it last weekend. Everyone walking along is stopping and looking.

“It’s just such a shock. The buildings are all roughly the same colour but it’s completely on its own. Even from the edge of the pier you can see it.

“I know doing everything exactly the same is a bit boring but it’s completely not in keeping with the seafront.”

The bright pink paint job covers part of the wall of the block of flats next-door and is splattered on to the frame of a plaque outlining the building’s heritage.

Rob Blann, 64, an author who is behind the plaque and has family involvement in the RNLI, said: “My family were lifeboatmen in Worthing so it feels terrible.

“It’s an eyesore as it is anyway and to think what it means to me and see it desecrated like that is even worse.”

Luke Giles, 25, of East Worthing, added: “It’s horrible. I would be upset if I lived next-door.”

When The Argus tried to ask Ms Capone about the paint job she was talking to police and asked to be left alone.

A Sussex Police spokesman said officers were called to a public order incident on Friday just after 1pm.

He added: “A 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of breaching her Asbo. She is currently in custody.”

A spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said: “The building on Marine Parade is not listed and although it is within a conservation area, we do not have any direct control over the colour that an owner may decide to paint their property.

He added: “We will request the owner to consider a more appropriate colour on this prominent seafront property.”
