A BUSKER has become an overnight Scandinavian sensation after a video of him performing a Eurovision song went viral.

Singer-songwriter Danny McEvoy has become a star in Finland thanks to his cover of their latest Eurovision Song Contest entry.

Each year the guitarist sings a cover of every Eurovision entry in their native language before the competition on his YouTube channel The Walrus Was Danny.

His cover of I Always Have To by Finnish punk band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, whose members all have learning difficulties, has been viewed more than 100,000 times after being shared by the national press in Finland.

The Newhaven man said the attention he is getting from the song has gone “ballistic”.

He said: “Last year I tried to do all 37 songs from Eurovision in the month of May but I then realised I only had ten days to do all the songs which was a challenge.

“This year I thought I would do them as they are released and perform covers – my one of Poland’s managed to get to the front page of YouTube searches.

“I then did the Finland one and it went ballistic, it is now on 127,000 views and the press in Finland picked it up and started posting my video.”

He added: “I reckon Finland will do well as the guys have Down’s Syndrome and autism and are singing about what they are unable to do because of their condition.

“It is a punk song and I think that kind of social comment will be appreciated – but bear in mind they have two semi finals to get through yet.”

Mr McEvoy previously reached some fame with his YouTube channel – such as performing every Beatles song and every top three chart hit of the sixties, seventies and eighties – aiming to do the same this year for the nineties.

The Walrus Was Danny has 4,080 subscribers but has managed clock nearly 3.5 million views.

He said his dream would be to write a UK Eurovision entry with his daughter Jasmine.
