Thrill-seekers slid down the road on a 100-metre water slide to raise money for charity.

Spectators gathered to watch them slither to the bottom of Edward Street, Brighton, on the RNLI's Slipway Slide.

Places were allocated to 360 people who had taken part in a mobile phone ballot costing £1.50 to enter, raising money for the rescue service.

Jo Sinclair, 37, from Kemp Town, said: "We live next to the sea so we are always hearing about the RNLI rescuing people.

"Today is my birthday and it seemed like a good idea and it is to raise money for charity.

"I got stuck in the middle on the way down – I think I needed to wear something different."

Richard Kennedy, 23, from Hove, performed the feat in a full suit.

He said: “Why would you do it in normal clothes? – You might as well make a day of it.

"And for a special event I always wear a suit.

“It did hinder my aerodynamics."

Jade Cohen, a Brighton RNLI lifeboat volunteer who had a go on the slide, said: "It was so much fun sliding along one of the busiest shopping streets in Brighton with everyone cheering us on."

She added: "Many of our lifeboats are launched via a slipway, so there is an obvious connection to an event like this - although most of our slipways aren't as long as the one in Brighton today."

The slide has been created especially for the RNLI and will also be taken to events in Plymouth and Bradford later this year.
