A Georgian mansion has had its multimillion pound price tag cut less than two months after going on the market.

The six-bedroom Regency mansion at 26 Lewes Crescent, Brighton, made headlines in January when the asking price of £4.25 million was announced.

It is now being offered for £4 million, though this is still enough for it be the most expensive house in the city.

Previously the most expensive property was 44 Tongdean Avenue, Hove, which sold for £3.4 million last June.

Estate agents Brand Vaughan said there has been great interest in the property, although they have not received any offers yet.

It is also being marketed internationally by Savills.

Exclusive seafront square Lewes Crescent was part of Thomas Read Kemp’s plan for a Regency-style estate, now known as Kemptown.

Lewes Crescent has been home to Vita Sackville-West, Laurence Olivier and King Edward VII’s daughter Princess Louise, among others.

Musician Nick Cave and his wife live in nearby Sussex Square.

Cate Blanchett bought a house in the square back in the early 2000s. When she was moving in the road had to be closed while she had an enormous bath winched into the house.

The square has private communal gardens and a tunnel to the beach, which inspired Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole, after Lewis Carroll visited 11 Lewes Crescent.

The Grade I-listed house has been renovated and now boasts such luxuries as a steam room, heated floors, iPad controlled lighting, electronic rain-sensitive windows and built-in coffee machines.

It was designed by Brighton architects Charles Busby and Amon Henry Wilds who was also responsible for the Unitarian Church in New Road, Brighton.

It is one of few complete Regency mansions left in the city, and was also the original home of Roedean school.
