A mother-of-two with blood cancer whose fight for survival led to an international hunt for a bone marrow donor has died.

Nikki Braterman passed away in hospital on Saturday just over a week after having a transplant operation.

Mrs Braterman had developed complications following the procedure.

The 45-year-old from Brighton was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in December 2013 and had undergone many months of treatment to combat the disease.

The family launched an appeal to find a bone marrow stem cell donor, through the website www.perfecttenmatch.co.uk, which provides information and links to all UK and many international donor registries.

A donor for Nikki was found in France and the transplant took place on March 12.

Since the appeal was launched there have been more than over 350,000 hits on the Perfect Ten Match and Delete Blood Cancer has reported a 200% increase in requests for donor packs since they supported Mrs Braterman’s campaign.

In a statement following her death, Mrs Braterman’s husband Geoff thanked everyone for their support over the past 15 months and said he will continue to encourage more people to register as bone marrow donors.
