ZERO-waste pioneers who use food destined for landfill could have found a new home in a shipping container on the seafront.

The Real Junk Food Project is launching a £15,000 fundraising appeal today as it looks to finance a move to a new seven-day home.

Organisers of the project, currently based in One Church in Brighton, are considering an offer of a shipping container on either the seafront or in a former community garden.

The project has had a rapid rise since its launch at the end of 2014, saving more than two tonnes of waste food from going to landfill and feeding more than 500 people at its pop-up community cafe in One Church, Gloucester Place, every Friday between 1pm and 3pm.

The group has now been approached by the company behind the Brighton Housing Trust shipping containers site in Richardson’s Yard, Brighton, with the possibility to use a custom-built unit on the seafront or a derelict site next to the Earth and Stars pub in Windsor Street.

The group has also been offered the use of the kitchen at The Admiral pub in Elm Grove and founder Adam Buckingham hopes to start cooking from there next month.

He said: “I’m not going to lie, the response to the project has been overwhelming.

“When I started, I thought the dream would be the possibility to run seven days a week in maybe three years.

“It’s been absolutely remarkable and I put it down to everybody’s passion – it’s a great example of a grass roots movement organically growing on its own steam.

“More and more people are coming to us offering their services: builders, sparkies and carpenters offering to work for free.

“A shipping container company came to us and offered to make us a bespoke facility.

“We could do a lot with a shipping container.

“The long-term goal is to develop a community centre but the short-term goal is to be up and running seven days a week.”

Mr Buckingham hopes a new home could be found within a matter of months if the fundraising bid to raise £15,000 in a month is successful.

The bid went live online this morning and will be officially launched at 1pm in One Church, with examples of food waste meals, upcycled artworks and musical performers.
