TALENTED hair students proved their credentials with brilliant buns and marvellous mops at an annual hair show.

City College Brighton and Hove hosted an abundance of glamour – and hairspray – at its ‘Hollywood meets Bollywood’ Hair Show.

Pupils and their models showcased their weird, wacky and wonderful hair styles in front of proud family members and teachers, plus a judging panel led by former The Only Way Is Essex star Amy Childs.

The television star said: “I’ve never seen anything like the show the students put on tonight. The different styles they came up with were amazing and really original.”

The beauty queen and business woman was joined on the judging panel by Brighton Gogglebox star Stephen Webb and an array of hair and beauty experts from across the city.

The event, which raised cash for MacMillan Cancer Support and involved around 120 students, featured work from 16-year-olds through to adult learners.

Judge Morgan Rhodes, artistic director of Trevor Sorbie Brighton, said: “We’re looking for lovely hair, creativity I think is the key. I like to see an all-over look including the outfit too.

"We want power hair but you don’t want to see it let down with a poor outfit either. They need to think of the whole package.

“There were seven categories across different age ranges so it was a good chance for students to put their creativity to the test.”

Asked what her top tips were for budding hairdressers of the future, Ms Rhodes said: “It’s important to do something that you enjoy doing, do styles or themes that you like – especially for competitions like this.

“It takes passion and creativity to be a career hairdresser – and also of course you need to be good with people too. You must be able to talk to people to do this job.”

Natasha Crisp, 27, a Level 2 hairdressing student from Brighton, said: “I’m in the 19 and over group. I went for a Bollywood-wedding style, where I’ve built a cage up and put feathers and some diamantes in as well.

“I’ve been thinking about designs since last August and it’s taken nearly six hours to put it all together. It’s been exhausting but it’s a great theme and a good chance for us to put our skills to the test.”

Fellow Level 2 student Gavin Harvie, 41, was crowned winner of Best in Show.

He said: “I was shocked and very happy to win. Being involved in a show like this gave me a unique opportunity and I really enjoyed the experience.

“Coming to City College to re-train for a change of career has been a big step for me but the younger students have always made me feel welcome and I’ve felt really supported by the tutors who clearly care a great deal about all their students.”

Rachel Turner, City College’s hairdressing curriculum team leader, said: “All students embraced the ‘Hollywood meets Bollywood’ theme with so much enthusiasm, using their creativity, skill and talent to come up with genuinely outstanding work.

“The success of the show made me very proud indeed.”
