EXASPERATED Gretna chief executive Graeme Muir wants summer football introduced.

The Borders club's Scottish Cup fourth round replay against Morton was a late call-off due to a waterlogged Fir Park last night.

And Gretna, who groundshare with Motherwell, face a fixture backlog that will test their playing resources - and will take its toll on Fir Park.

For those reasons, Muir has backed a growing campaign to end the winter blues.

His answer was to call for Scotland's football calendar to be radically changed.

Despite SFA chief executive Gordon Smith and Rangers boss Walter Smith leading the fight for a winter break, the SPL ruled last week there would be no alteration to the fixture list next season.

But Muir wants to go one step further and said: "This is just ridiculous. We talk about it every year and nothing happens. It's crazy. We should change the calendar, start in March and have a mid-season break in July.

"In June you can have three games in the one week. Even my kids wouldn't come tonight because of the weather.

"The Scandinavians and Irish do it, there are plenty of people talking about it so why don't we get it sorted out. We need to have a radical look at it."
