The Argus: What projects are you working on at the moment?

Kate Foley: At the moment I’m focusing on working mainly on editorial, styling stories for Vogue Mexico, Vogue Taiwan, Yahoo Style and other independent magazines.

I continue to work with a number of brands as a consultant and stylist, I usually spend more time working with these brands in the run up to their show in either New York or London fashion weeks.

Sometimes I work on retail projects, for example, last year I worked on putting together a selection of special product with brands I love for the store in the Miami Edition Hotel which opened in November.

I also work with a large online retailer as consulting fashion director.

TA: I notice you describe your style as eclectic and not necessarily influenced by current fashion trends – are there any items which you feel stand the test of time and are a key piece for any wardrobe?

KF: I think it really depends on your style and what works with your body. For me I feel incredibly comfortable wearing mid-length skirts.

It’s really the most important part of my uniform, I wear a skirt with a sweater, T-shirt or pretty top and know I’ll feel comfortable all day and also look smart. As skirts are such a staple for me I always find myself buying new ones in different colours and prints. Marni always makes beautiful, comfortable skirts. I also always wear earrings, fun interesting artsy ones, again I get them from Marni or smaller jewellery designers.

TA: You’re known for your red lipstick – what brand and colour do you wear?

KF: I always wear Nars lipstick. I use their velvet matte lip pencils which as so easy to use and actually stay on.

The shade depends on my mood and the time of year, I use ‘Dragon Girl’ which is a pinky red, ‘Mysterious Red’ which is more classic bright red and ‘Damned’ which is a dark plum colour.

TA: Could you tell me about some of the outfits you have worn in the last week and how you compile them? What are your tips for people to create their own look and make it work?

KF: I’ve been in LA for the last week so I’ve been getting used to dressing for the warm weather after being so used to piling on layers over the last few months in freezing NY.

Since I’ve been here I’ve worn a pair of sandals by Isabel Marant every day. They’re smart but also incredibly comfortable so I can happily spend the whole day in them.

I spent the day visiting local multi brand boutiques two days ago so I wore a pair of beautiful Tory Burch earrings, a white broidery Anglaise blouse and a black and white gingham skirt.

Yesterday I wore my sandals, a colourful Suno skirt and a simple white shirt with Marni earrings.

Last night I had a fashion event so I dressed up and wore a pair of black silk culottes, a black t-shirt and a floral silk jacquard jacket from Suno, I wore a pair of yellow suede high sandals from Burberry and Marni earrings. (Of course!) TA: What part of your beauty routine do you swear by?

KF: I’m really careful about taking care of my skin, it's so important. I always remove my make up with a gentle oil cleanser, usually from Dermalogica and then wash my face with a light foaming wash.

I am rigorous about moisturising. In the winter New York is very dry so I usually use two moisturisers, the first is a very light simple one which all the make-up artists use called Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré and then the second is by Dr Jart called Ceramidin Cream which really amazing and much thicker but doesn’t feel greasy or heavy.

I never go out without SPF on my face and use a tinted moisturiser by Nars instead of foundation which is SPF 30.

TA: When did you first realise you wanted to go into fashion and do you feel the often experimental and adventurous ways of dressing in Sussex and particularly Brighton inspired you?

KF: I’ve always had a love for clothes, ever since I was small I loved dressing up, and making my own clothing.

Brighton was one of my favourite places to visit when I was young, I always saw it as this amazing artistic place where people were really individual and interesting.

My sister and I used to get the train and spend the day in Brighton. I loved shopping in the lanes and was fascinated watching people.

I like to think I still dress in a really British way despite living in New York and I really like to combine vintage finds with designer pieces and high street finds. Really for me, fashion is about having fun and enjoying getting dressed.
