A postnatal depression support group is in desperate need of support after its lottery funding ended.

Project Wide Berth is a mosaic art group based in Hove which offers support to new mums.

They particularly help those living with postnatal depression and give them the time and space to be free and honest about motherhood and mental health.

The group was founded by Tamsin Williams, who spends time with the mums and teaches them mosaic techniques and other related art activities.

This, she said, helps if they are experiencing low mood or postnatal depression.

The artist added: “After experiencing psychosis myself after the birth of my child, I realised there was a gap in the market, a need for some support for mothers experiencing low mood.”

The project had been funded by the Awards for All lottery scheme since December 2014, which helped them run the sessions for more than 20 mothers.

Mum Salma Mustafa said: “It has changed my view on life to do something creative.

“I feel proud that I can learn new things and meet up with other mums under ever increasing pressure.”

The group meets every Thursday afternoon from 12.30pm to 2.30pm at the Honeycroft Centre in St Barnabas Church Hall, Sackville Road, Hove.

A new course is planned to start on May 7 and will run until July 16.

It can accommodate up to 10 mums with their babies or pre-school children. A free crèche is also provided.

However, Jess Gow, assistant coordinator for the project, fears without funding they will have to close.

She said: “We worked out that with the cost of hiring the hall, childcare places and all of the art materials that we need, each place we offer is approximately £100, so a ten-week course will cost £1,000.”

Referrals are made to the group by health visitors and GPs and leaflets have been given out at mother and baby groups.

Wide Berth is currently trying to secure another grant in order to continue their work.

Organisers are asking for donations in the form of broken plates, tiles and mirrors.

They also want childcare providers to volunteer to be part of a rota scheme, to help look after the children in the crèche.
