Rail passengers heading to and from London face a delay of up to an hour following a signalling fault.
A problem near Balcombe are causing delays to trains between Brighton, Hove and Lewes and Redhill.
London Victoria and London Bridge stations are expected to be busier than normal because of the fault.
National Rail said buses have been requested to run between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges.
Disruption is likely to continue until at least 6pm.
Southern passengers may use First Great Western, London Underground, South West Trains Southeastern and Thameslink services on reasonable routes.
Thameslink passengers may use Gatwick Express and Southern services on reasonable routes.
