Shappi Khorsandi delivered a delightful range of subject matters and humorous observations to the full theatre.

Shappi’s brand of comedy didn’t usually produce belly-laughs. The audience listened with interest to her fascinating stories and the giggles often derived from her original conclusions.

The Iranian-born comic, daughter of satirist Hadi Khorsandi, discussed topics including life as a single mum, hen nights and bridesmaid dresses to her childhood, UKIP, racism and cultural differences. She also gently probed members of the audience about their lives and teased them for looking like “radio 4 listeners”.

Multi-dimensional - Shappi came across as sweet but feisty, girlish but bold, giggly but sharp.

A typical witty anecdote consisted of Shappi expressing the guilt of being a single parent, how she observed the perfect, beautiful, family unit in the park, before revealing “they were geese”.

The life of a comedian travelling the country was also scrutinised as Shappi described having to de-rude from London life in places where when you ask someone for directions, ”they walk you there.”

Shappi, who will be performing the festival circuit this summer, including Glastonbury and Latitude, was able to win the hearts of the audience with her discerning and charming nature.
