A MAN has been charged over the death of a beloved teenager who was killed in a horror car crash.

Sharief Ruhomally, of Hereford Street, Brighton, has been charged with death by careless driving while over the drink-drive limit in connection with the death of 18-year-old Alex Jackson.

The teenager, a former student at City College Brighton and Hove, was killed in a two-car crash near Brighton Racecourse at the end of last year.

Ruhomally has been bailed to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on May 28.

The 29-year-old was allegedly driving the car carrying Alex and Alex’s girlfriend Chantelle Marriott, then 18, and their friend Scott Hammond, then 22.

Alex and Chantelle worked at the Poundstretcher on London Road.

The BMW 318L carrying the four collided with a white and blue Skoda taxi just after midnight on November 28 on Warren Road.

The emergency services were called after the taxi driver managed to raise the alarm and all of young people were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Alex died the following day and there was an outpouring of grief from friends and family as people across the city paid tribute to the much loved teen.

He was hailed as a young man who was “always smiling” by friends and remembered as a “cheeky little boy who loved football” by his family.

After his death his family revealed Alex was also an organ donor and they said his organs helped to save four people – with his uncle praising him as a “hero”.

Brighton and Hove Albion and their fans also paid tribute to the teenager, who had been part of Albion in the Community’s Kicks project for the past ten years.

During the 18th minute of the match against Millwall on December 12 last year, thousands of people applauded the teenager – an act which his family described as “overwhelming”.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Sharief Ruhomally, 29, a retail employee of Hereford Court, Hereford Street, Brighton, has been charged with causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit in connection with the death of Alex Jackson following a road traffic collision in Warren Road, Brighton, on November 28.”

Background

AFTER Alex Jackson’s death people from across the city came together to raise money in his memory.

Haley-Marie Mitchell, Alex’s cousin, set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

They managed to raise nearly £1,500 – exceeding their £1,000 target.

The ICU was chosen as Alex’s family hailed the medical staff in the unit as “worth their weight in gold”.
