Brighton and Hove City Council is reassuring motorists they do not need a smartphone or access to the internet to pay for parking in Brighton and Hove.

The council is reassuring residents they do not need iPhones or Android devices to register for the PayByPhone scheme to buy parking time.

The council plans to remove half of the 1,200 cash parking machines in the city by June and has been holding tuition courses to help residents use the PayByPhone scheme. Council officials say that residents can set up an account without using the internet by calling an automated service using any phone to create an account.

Alternative payment methods include using cash in the remaining machines nearby, using on-street credit card machines, paying at one of 150 city shops displaying a PayPoint sign or texting from older-style mobiles.

Motorists are being assured that there will be at least one machine in each street following the changes.

The current 15p service charge on PayByPhone will be reduced to 10p once machines start being removed although additional charges are made if users choose to have text alerts warning when parking time is expiring.
