The Correspondents didn’t so much take the stage at Concorde 2, but explode into the Victorian venue.
Made up of singer and MC Ian Bruce and DJ Chucks, the electro swing duo is dynamic on record, but live they burst with frenetic energy.
Frontman Ian Bruce, an Eton-educated painter, appeared on stage dressed in a flamboyant black and white costume, which swirled around his eccentric dancing.
His dance moves have a cult following online, and he is particularly famous for using a treadmill and trampoline on stage at festivals.
Several songs finished with him spinning until he seemed to collapse into the stage, whether deliberately or through sheer dizziness.
The swing rhythms and melodies underpinning their songs could seem tame alone, but Chuck’s racing beats and creative mixing and Bruce’s varied and expressive vocals keep their music edgy and exciting.
Fear And Delight, which was recently used as the soundtrack to BBC Three sitcom Crims, is their most recognisable track, but What’s Happened To Soho? was the standout performance.
The crowd was warmed up by Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer, who performs ‘chap-hop’ - rap entirely in Queen’s English.
An immensely enjoyable night in one of Brighton’s most exciting venues.
Five stars
