A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was discovered in a flat.

At about 5.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday (4 May) police went to a flat in Vernon Terrace, Brighton after a member of the public reported concern for the occupant at that address.

On entering the property officers found the body of a man, who is believed to be the elderly occupant.

The death is being treated as suspicious and a 49-year-old local man was arrested on Monday afternoon on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

However any further information will not be available until after a post-mortem, which is expected to take place on Thursday (7 May).

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said; "We believe that deceased and the person in custody were known to each other. Enquiries are at an early stage but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this death at this time."

Enquiries are being made to trace the dead man's next of kin.

An address in Tyson Place, Brighton, is also being searched by police in connection with this investigation.
