A TREASURE trove of items belonging to members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience has been discovered in a storage unit.

The trunk, stencilled with the words “J.H Exp handle with care”, was discovered in a storage facility and sold.

But when the new owner cracked it open, they discovered it was full of one-of-a-kind Hendrix memorabilia.

A drum kit, guitars, vintage outlandish shirts, cowboy boots, leather jackets, jazz records and even a limited edition signed copy of Paul McCartney’s 1997 solo album Flaming Pie together with a letter from the Beatle was found.

The trunk itself was one of the seven which was found after the guitarist died in 1970 aged 27. It belonged to Jimi Hendrix’s drummer Mitch Mitchell and was discovered in a storage unit in Rye before being sold on.

The contents of the trunk are now up for auction in Eastbourne and the items are expected to fetch between £30 and £1,500 each when they go under the hammer today.

There were two right-handed guitars found in the trunk – a maple jazz acoustic guitar, circa 1950 to 1960 which is believed to be a Hoffner, and a US-made Fender hard tail Stratocaster.

It is unclear if the acoustic guitar was ever used by Hendrix and the Stratocaster was made many years after the rock legend’s death.

One of the other big finds was a drum kit featuring five different snare drums, a collapsible bass drum, a floor standing tom tom and a 20 inch cymbal which are believed to have been used by the Experience’s drummer.

The signed album from Sir Paul McCartney is addressed to the late Mitch Mitchell. The Beatle wrote: “Only 200 have been pressed and sent to ‘extremely groovy’ people such as yourself.

“Linda and I hope it brings you a moment or two of joy. We also hope you have a record player. Failing that, I understand that when warmed up it can be made into a rather attractive plant pot holder.”

A selection of vintage clothes from the sixties was also discovered in the trunk.

A 1960s Mr Fish men’s shirt with a 15 inch neck was found along with another unlabelled shirt as well two leather jackets – one from the 61st Fighter Squadron from the US Air Force.
