Lake Malawi have got form. Handsome front man Albert Černý, who hails from Prague, was previously in Charlie Straight, which hit the big time in his home country with various Czech versions of the Grammys, as well as supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Currently touring the UK, the band belted out their gentle brand of indie pop, with Aubrey and We Are Making Love Again (a forthcoming EP) the highlights of their jaunty sets at the Paganini Ballroom and the Fiddler’s Elbow. Oliver Daldry, appearing at the Spiegelpub, mastered indie-folk with his Ed Sheeran alike wistful songs accompanied by noodling guitar, and confident vocals.
But it was young Dan Owen who blew people away at the Spiegelpub with his bluesey guitar and harmonica promising enough as it was before he even opened his mouth.
Looking about 15, his huge rich vocals brought to mind a 50-year-old blues singer from the Deep South on a diet of whisky and cigarettes – similar in timbre and power to Ben Ottewell from Gomez.
Owen counts Mick Fleetwood among his fans, and with festival dates coming up this summer, the talented blues singer is sure to build on the buzz he’s created to date.
