New social housing with rents of less than £100 per week is being hailed as “the future of housing”.

The newly unveiled homes at Lambert Place in Lewes were described as a “housing revolution” by Brighton Housing Trust chief executive Andy Winter at their official opening.

Developers KSD Housing in partnership with one of the world’s leading material suppliers, have completed their first UK project with the development of the disused playground.

Work and pensions minister Iain Duncan Smith has been among a number of officials to have visited the site within recent weeks.

The two new homes are built on land provided by Lewes District Council under a 25 year lease agreement which leaves both parties with 50% equity.

Ozay Ali, the firm’s head of property and development, said that the homes were built at half the price of the average housing association property but were about 30% larger.

The light gauge steel construction of the homes use 95% recyclable materials with construction costs up to 50% lower than traditional methods of construction.

Mr Winter praised the low rent levels and speedy construction time of the project which saw the homes built “in a fraction of the time of ordinary developments” within six weeks.

He said: “Nothing in housing has excited me as much in recent years as this development.

“The standard of the accommodation is much better than you will find in most social housing, and the rents are incredibly low for the south east.

“If I was a local councillor elsewhere in Sussex and my officers were not kicking down the door of KSD inviting them into their area, I would question whether the officers were doing their job.

“I think we might just be seeing the future of housing in the south east offering homes that ordinary people on low and medium incomes can afford.”

Mr Ali said: “These homes in Lambert Place are the future for affordable housing. These houses will be for two local families in need of homes with rents that they can afford.”

Councillor Rob Blackman, Lewes District Council leader, said: “I’m delighted to be the national lead on this scheme.

“I invite councils up and down the country to come and see the houses, it’s time to stop talking about the housing crisis and get on and deliver housing”.
