A BUBBLE machine and colourful and scented plants are helping children cope with a stay in hospital.

The new sensory garden at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton provides a quiet area for young patients and their families as well as a place to play and develop.

The £45,000 garden was paid for by Rockinghorse, the official fundraising charity for the hospital.

Hospital play team specialist Kate Woodhams said: “This garden will give us a usable outside space to take the children whilst they are in hospital. It is a relaxing, fun environment for the children and their families to use.

“We will also use it to help aid long term patients’ development during their hospital stay and to minimise the psychological effect of their hospital visit.”

Other features of the garden include a canopy and interactive boards which play animal sounds and musical instruments.

Rockinghorse chief executive Ryan Heal was joined by children’s TV presenter Sid Sloane and former Brighton and Hove mayor Britan Fitch for the unveiling of the new garden this week.
