PARISHIONERS have celebrated the birthday of the Church with a blaze of glory.
Torches and beacons were set alight across the county from West Wittering to Fairlight to mark the Christian festival of Pentecost.
Reverend Peter Owen Jones from the local deanery of Seaford lit the beacon at Firle beacon to symbolise a diocesan-wide strategy for churches to reach out to their local communities.
Dr Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, saluted the “energy, commitment and enthusiasm” of priests and residents taking part.
Dr Warner, who visited several of parish events himself, said: “We chose Pentecost because of the connection with the Holy Spirit coming upon the church after the ascension of Jesus – and the number and range of activities organised by our churches has been remarkable.”
