AT THE bottom of Tim and Jean Blewitt’s garden is a perfectly ordinary potting shed.

Inside are tools, gardening equipment and a hosepipe – much like any other you might think.

But retired Mr Blewitt’s labour of love at the bottom of Harvey Road, in Goring, is something of an architectural artwork.

Built from reclaimed friezes and bricks from demolished Victorian buildings, Goring Folly – as the he lovingly calls it – has a tower, spiral staircase, a natural well and ruined arch.

Mr Blewitt’s glorious shed is now in the running to be named Shed of the Year.

His creation has been whittled down from thousands of outbuildings across the country and is now just one of a handful set to appear on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces on Channel 4.

He hopes the public will vote his shed the best – and vows to open it to the public for visitors to come and admire if he wins.

He said: “I saw the competition on TV last year and thought ‘my shed’s much better than that’.

“The winning one was okay, but the others weren’t very special.

“I absolutely think mine could be the best. I built it in 1999 to celebrate the Millennium. I did it all myself and it took just over a year. It’s mostly made from recycled materials.

“I call it an architectural work of art, but it is still used as a potting shed, for garden tools and things.

“Its function hasn’t changed; it just looks a bit different now.

“People are really surprised when they see it. Everyone loves it.

“In the past we have opened up our garden to the public as part of the National Gardens Scheme and if I win I will definitely do it again and give everyone the opportunity to come and look at the folly.”

Voting for Shed of the Year is open until Friday. Mr Blewitt’s shed is in the “unique” category.

The story so far

The Shed of the Year competition has been running since 2007.

Ever since, potty garden potterers have been creating weird and wonderful outbuildings, including bars, beach huts and studios.

Last year TV architect George Clarke showed the very best shed in the country on his Amazing Spaces show on Channel 4. The winning shed, in London, had an allotment on its roof. In 2013 the winner featured an upturned boat as the roof while in 2012 the winning shed was heart-shaped.
