ART-lovers will be able to buy new and bespoke work from leading urban artists, “renegade potters” and edible art pioneers at a unique sale this weekend.

Brighton gallery artrepublic is inviting art lovers to head to Jubilee Square tomorrow for the launch of their inaugural Art Yard Sale.

Organisers have said the event will give art buyers a unique opportunity to buy work direct from the artist, giving them the chance to get their hands on customised and bespoke works.

The event has drawn comparisons with the Art Car Boot fair in London where art lovers have been able to pick up bargains from celebrated artists including Gavin Turk, Sir Peter Blake and Bob and Roberta Smith.

Participating artists include “extreme craftivist and renegade potter” Carrie Reichardt, whose works were recently on display at the V&A, and world famous food historian and doyenne of edible art AVM Curiosities, who will be making her debut in the city.

Also taking part will be well-established urban artist Pure Evil who claims ancestry from Tudor martyr Thomas More and who has exhibited across the globe including in the US, Brazil, China, South Africa and Mongolia.

Brighton-based Sara Pope, whose portrait of Pope Francis was recently accepted by the Vatican to hang alongside masterpieces by Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael, will have a stall while fellow city-based creative Eelus will be performing live screen-printing at the event.

Fellow local artist Bonnie and Clyde said The Art Yard Sale was “a great idea and a fun event” giving artists the chance to engage and connect face to face with art lovers.

She said: “Over the last 10 years with all the funding cuts there has been a severe lack of financial and practical help for artists from traditional sources so it’s a really important time for the art-loving public to be supportive of the arts and this is one way to get involved and share their good will.”

The artist said in “spirit of the occasion” she will be selling her new limited edition print Dream Come True at a special discount one day only price.

The yard sale, held between 11am and 5pm, is one of the closing events at this year’s Brighton Fringe, of which artrepublic has been a visual arts sponsor of since 2010.

Quote

“I spend so much time in the studio not seeing or speaking to anyone, it will be nice to get out and connect with people who are willing to part with their money rather than over email.

“I have a lot of customers who I have emailed over many years but never actually met who will be coming down and seeing how the art is produced right in front of them.”
