Detectives have arrested a man after a woman was raped after her attacker met her at a taxi rank outside a Wetherspoons. 

A 40-year-old woman from St Leonards had been out with friends in the town last Saturday when she decided to go home.

She was waiting at the taxi rank outside Wetherspoons in Havelock Road at 2am on Sunday (24 May) when she was approached by a man and they began talking.

They got into a taxi together and went back to an unknown address where he raped her. The man was described as being black with short dreadlocks, about 5"8", and in his twenties.

On Thursday (28 May) a 21-year old St Leonards man was arrested on suspicion of the rape. After being interviewed he was released on police bail until August 22 while enquiries continue.

Detective Constable Chris Milner said; "We received a lot of information from the public following our appeal earlier this week, and the taxi driver who we were seeking purely as a witness has also come forward.

"We are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the area early on Sunday morning. Do you remember seeing a man of this description? Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 244 of 24/05."
