Au revoir to French radio in Sussex

A French radio station that developed a massive cult following in Sussex has been taken off the air after being raided by communications watchdogs.

Paris-based station Fip built up a massively dedicated and diverse range of listeners in Brighton through the last decade after a mystery male fan grew so smitten with it he set up his own antenna to broadcast the station for the city from his home in Hanover.

Listeners ranging from politicians to shopkeepers grew fond of the station's quirky range of music and lack of adverts or chat, which was broadcast on 98.5FM and 91FM.

Its popularity grew to such an extent that a special night was set up in homage and people began moving houses just so they could live in an area which could receive the broadcasts, resulting in a boom in property prices in certain areas.

But The Argus can reveal that following a complaint, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) raided the premises in Hanover and confiscated the transmitter, taking Fip off the airwaves in Sussex.

The mystery man behind Fip's broadcasts in Brighton, believed to be a former radio engineer, could now face prosecution although Ofcom last night refused to comment on the legal status of the case.

A spokesman said: "We raided the station but we cannot go into the reasons why we did that. They were known to us before the raid. We also seized equipment but again we cannot go into what was taken."

It is understood the raid took place because Ofcom wanted to investigate whether a breach of broadcasting regulations had taken place.

The move has sparked outrage and disappointment among the station's legion of fans in Brighton, many of whom have written to The Argus in an attempt to discover what had happened to the radio station.

Susan Bentley, from Compton Avenue, Brighton, said: "This station is sorely missed - it brought a fresh musical perspective to our city."

Jacquetta Benjamin, from St Michael's Place, Brighton, said: "I am a pensioner living on my own and Fip was one of my few comforts."

Brighton and Hove city councillor Bill Randall said: "I've been listening to Fip for around ten years now - it's one of the perks of living here."

Last night sources close to the man who set up the transmitter hoped that the radio station would be back on the air sooner rather than later.

They also claimed that talks were ongoing between the mystery transmitter and Ofcom to try to resolve the situation amicably.

The source said: "He's hoping all of this dies down very soon so he can get it back on the airwaves. It's hugely popular."

Fip can still be listened to through its internet site radiofrance.fr/chaines/fip/endirect.

What do you think? How will the loss of Fip affect you? Add your comments below.

Maybe Ofcom should take note of the popularity of Fip and investigate some of the other radio stations around here and the way the run.
I will miss Fip, but hope to hear it back soon. I put my money on some of the other stations complaining because Fip was getting more listeners than them!

FIP has done what UK radio (nationally and locally) seems unable to - showed it is possible to mix musical genres and get away from ghettoising listeners into 'urban' v. pop v. oldie

I'm sorry to have to admit that I may have been responsible for the station being taken off air as I did register a complaint to the licensing people not realising hoe popular the station was.I hope it wasnt raided because of what I saids though as I would never have wanted to deprive people of a much loved station.I'm sure this can be sorted out soon and th station back on air with a proper license. However as im sure you realise it is important that everyone plays fairly by the rules of the game and so they should have a proper license to broadcast.

I totally agree, it's very hard to get a license and usually requires a huge amount of money, if it was causing no harm to anyone, why interfere with the community's listening enjoyment?

Trying to get a licence these days is a piece of ****. But for some reason no one wants to get off their arse and get one - there was only ONE applicant for the Brighton Community Radio licence when it was advertised and so by default we now have to put up with the pretentious arty claptrap that's now being aired on 97.2FM.

Fip / Radio4a / anyone with an ounce of sense could have applied for this licence AND got a handout from Ofcom to help run it.

Iain, I think it's fair to say that it's not your fault that FIP has gone, and it's more to do with Ofcom clearing the airwaves for this new "community" station.

Ian Hickling, Newbury says...

There can be no question as to the legality of rebroadcasting another station's output.
The person in question did not have, and could not have been awarded a licence to do so under HM Government's regulations, so it was obviously contrary to the current legislation.

There could be loads of FM stations. The addition of Reverb is great - at last somewhere you can actually hear local bands etc. But I still want FIP, I still want Radio 4A and there's nobody who should be stopping that. Nobody owns the air even if they say they do.

Ofcom did not have to look far to find that FiP was being broadcast in the Brighton area as there is a consultation document on their own website attributed to a J.Warmington which quite clearly states that, sorry Mr Smith to steal your thunder. Vive le FiP

Curiously, although I live in Brighton, I had originally been listening to it online (I had been looking for something else on the Radio France website when I got a pleasant surprise). It was only when someone pointed out that it was available over the airwaves that I was able to listen to it in the bath, kitchen garden, taxis, shops etc. Ofcom, you have a lot to answer for: not for raiding the rebroadcasters, but for permitting British airwaves to be filled with mindless pap.

All 'legitimate' radio stations have to cover their running costs and they have to jump through Ofcom's hoops. It's just a shame that they Don't meet our needs. We just want FIP. 98 minutes of music per hour and 2 mins of news please! Perhaps if Reverb used Fip for their output the community would be happy and their job would be done. One of the nice things about trips to Brighton was having FIP playing - a quirky soundtrack for the area. The many years FIP has been on in Brighton - at least 10 years - made it seem immune from action in that more civilizsed Bohemian place. I did wonder if the arrival of community radio would spell the end for FIP in Brighton but perhaps the new station could take FIP as an over night sustaining service? The high technical quality of illegal relay was a credit to the operator, the use of two frequencies with RDS was perhaps an extravagance but the station was a joy. It is what BBC 6Music could have been but with a flavour of our cross-channel neighbours.
FIP is still available in high quality for a small outlay via satellite, not Sky's, but easy enough to install. Or connect one of the now legal FM gadgets to a computer tuned to the web stream and restore FIP to the airwaves of your own home at least.
A community radio group could apply to produce a similar format to FIP for local francophones, jazz and world music fans. FIP could even be carried at times but for the time being RIP FIP Brighton, let's hope for a resurrection by next Easter.

fip is possibly the most wonderful radio station around at the moment. if anything,it should be broadcast in more cities, not stolen from our airwaves. as i understand it, fip themselves were happy to be broadcast and even sent guest djs to the fip homage night mentioned in the article.as for our mystery pirate dj, i'd give the guy a grant so he could buy even more powerful equipment to bring this unique station to the masses.

As several people have said fip was one of the perks of living in brighton. It is very sad we cannot listen to it anymore, except in front of the computer. I would be happy to contribute to the mystery dj's funds if it help put right this narrow mindedness.

I am missing FiP. There is a big hole where once it was. I've looked up and down the dial, in the car, the various radios and found it ...all zipped up against the cold on the internet --but as someone said.....where's the fun in that? FiP transformed Brighton for me -- a great town but something so much more with FiP's continental flavour. It spoke to what Brightonians are most proud of --this city wears its open mindedness on its sleeve --its a melting pot. From it, there is so much cultural richness. I used to think it iconographic that we as a city loved and valued so actively this radio station--this link to our continental neighbours....with its "something for everyone" playlist --airing the bee gees next to Salif Keita next to Rachmaninoff. I find it doubly sad that, at a time when we most need to encourage neighbourliness and appreciate the history and culture of other places, possibly our most accessible source of this has vanished.

I am wondering who to write to -- I hope other lovers of FiP will also write and that the quiet strength of FiP will be voiced in the reaction to this silence on the air.

If FiP doesn't come back...... I will have to tell my cousin to strike his thought to move to Brighton from his current home in Australia -- having heard (and fallen in love with) FiP whilst driving around our city visiting us.

Is there anyone from Vive la Fip who can comment please? Brighton can't be exempt from the (radio) laws of the land but there must be a way to work around this. A community radio station taking mainly FIP would need at least two sources of funding and a defined community of interest. Are there any other stumbling blocks? Not so difficult is it? You want it, you make it happen.

Rex, Brighton says...

So sadly the FIP relay has disappeared. Shouldn't we be asking why the BBC couldn't have provided the same style of station that FIP is? It is the sort of programing that the BBC is eminently placed to provide. A commercial free, mixed eclectic music station funded by the license fee. But no, since the demise of offshore Pirate Radio the BBC has been obsessed with competing with the monoculture that commercial radio is. Thank goodness for the internet and well done to the mystery person in Hanover who brought us FIP on our radios for so long.

I became aware of FIP many years ago initially on medium wave where it can still be heard throughout Sussex on 585 khz.

I loved it so much that I invested in the necessary satellite equipment to hear it in full digital quality at home rather than put up with all the other so called (less interesting and varied) music stations with all their adverts and talking in many cases.

When driving into Brighton I used to enjoy listening to it on the FM frequencies and it is a shame these have now gone. I hope someone does have the initiative and ability to get this going again.

But in the meantime all is not lost for quality car hearing since it is possible to invest in a CD recorder and record its output onto an 80 minute audio CD either from the Internet or in my case the digital satellite signal. This I did to get round the listening quality problems in my and other areas. I have built up a library of 20 rerecordable CDs which allow me to listen to FIP as much as I like and still enjoy the total spontaneity and variety of its output. In case anyone is worried now though about what I am doing I would emphasise that I don't keep these CDs to build up a music library (although of course one could). Once I've heard one once I just rerecord over it.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if one of the BBC digital stations could be given over to a music service like FIPs!

Sorry to hear that FIP Brighton has been rumbled. I have family in Brighton and used to enjoy hearing it on FM radio on my frequent visits. I used to be able to hear it from just over the border in France in the Italian village that I live in, but alas Radio France took it off its Cote d'Azur FM frequencies some years ago, so it is Internet or Astra satellite for me too. FIP Brighton must have been one of the most successful landbased 'pirates' ever, lets hope that there is some way it can return legally or can return and that the authorities can turn a blind eye for another 10 years.

FIP enhanced our cosmopolitan city with an inspirational class of music. It truly appealed to a wide range of people. FIP's bohemian variety gave its Brightonian audience music of the world which English stations just do not provide.
