A MAN tried to kill his neighbour while on parole for killing another woman.

Keith Williams, 47, of Sackville Road, Hove, repeatedly stabbed Amaris Hatton after she invited him into her flat in September last year.

He had been released from prison less than one year before for the brutal killing of Melinda Croft in Hastings in 1986 and was on licence.

This morning Williams pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was jailed for life with a minimum of 16 years.

Hove Crown Court heard how he stabbed Ms Hatton  with a knife as they played computer games before returning to his flat.

He was arrested after a neighbour heard Ms Hatton's cries for  help. She had the tip of the knife lodged in her skull.

Sentencing, Judge David Rennie told him: "In 1986 you stabbed a teenager to death and you were convicted of manslaughter as opposed to murder because of your mental health problems.

"You were given a sentence of life imprisonment and you were released in October 2013 on licence.

"Only a year or so after your release you attempted to murder another person by subjecting them to a vicious knife attack in their own home."

Detective Constable Leianne Blampied said; "There was no apparent motive for the frenzied and vicious attack, which nearly resulted in the victim's death."
