Strange lights were seen flying high above the coast during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Lawyer Stefan Simanowitz, 38, was cycling along the Brighton and Hove seafront with flatmate Paul Storey when the pair spotted two lights in the sky between the Palace Pier and the West Pier at 12.45am.

Mr Simanowitz, of Victoria Cottages, Hove, said: "First there were two and then they disappeared. Then we saw another one arc out along exactly the same trajectory and then that was followed by another.

"In total there were six of them all following the same path. They were maybe a couple of hundred metres out to sea. Each one appeared for about three minutes."

He added the lights were not bright white but resembled the colour of a flame and that he could offer no real explanation for them.

In November last year The Argus reported how hundreds of people reported seeing similar lights in the sky along the seafront.

After baffling the police and air traffic controllers at Shoreham Airport it was revealed the lights were in fact flying Chinese lanterns tethered together with string making them move in parallel formation.

Did you see the lights in the sky on Saturday? Do you know what they were? Send your images to pictures@theargus.co.uk.

my father knocked my door this evening(22/4/07}to point out 5 orange lights in the sky of the same intensity as a nearby star, as we watched 4 more came into view, after about 3/4 minutes they gradually faded.

I saw these too! On Saturday night, driving down to the Marina at about 11.30pm, and then again on Sunday evening at around midnight while watching the meteor shower from Woodingdean. They were orange and moved very slowly, unlike the meteors which were white and fast moving. So glad I wasn't the only one to spot them! I would really like to know what they were.

Ooops - just noticed that the other comments are really old. The lights I saw were just last weekend, 11th and 12th August 07.

We saw 2 orange lights tonight at about 7.30pm. One light was hardly moving and it looked like it was going upwards until it faded out, the second light was moving s/e at the same height until it faded out,

Good to see so many others have also seen similar phenomenon (especially those of you who actually saw the same lights that I saw between the piers in Brighton in April. The Argus article gets some things wrong however. The lights were not that high (perhaps a hundred metres up), they were not that far out over the sea and they were not travelling very fast (approx.30-50mph). I have no idea what they were but they certainly were not tethered laterns.

I have photos of the lights seen on the night of the meteor shower. They were very eerie. They resembled aircraft flying in straight line formation with only 1 dim light showing.
