A PINK army of thousands of women did their friends and family proud in the fight against cancer at the annual Race for Life fundraiser.

More than 2,300 women and girls donned their running shoes and pink attire for the 5km event in Worthing yesterday.

The race raises vital funds for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.

Last year more than £150,000 was raised – but organisers are hoping yesterday’s efforts topped the £180,000 mark.

Runners included mum-to-be Laura Orpin, 26, of Worthing. Laura, who is five months pregnant, said: “This is my fifth year doing the Race for Life.

“I started running them when my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Luckily after intensive chemo and radiotherapy she beat it.

“This year we’re celebrating her being five years clear of cancer. Sadly my nan, uncle and cousin have all died from the disease so I run in memory of them too.

“I took it easy being five months pregnant, but still finished in 42 minutes. It’s an amazing event and every year the atmosphere is awesome.”

The race took thousands of runners from Steyne Gardens, on Worthing seafront, along the promenade and back.

Lynn Daly, of Cancer Research UK, said: “Taking part in Race for Life, alongside thousands of like minded women, is incredibly motivating.

“The atmosphere at all the events is full of emotion as participants wear signs on their backs declaring their reasons for taking part.

“Many will be remembering loved ones lost to cancer or celebrating the lives of those dear to them who have survived.”
