The owner of the dog which chased a sheep off the edge of a cliff at the Seven Sisters has been given a caution.

A 27-year-old woman from Kettering in Northamptonshire has now come forward and admitted that it was her dog that was involved.

The woman was spoken to and then accepted a conditional police caution for the offence of allowing her dog to worry livestock.

She also agreed to pay the owner of the sheep £100 and to write a letter of apology.

Response investigator Bernadette Peters-Shorter said: "People who are prosecuted can be taken to court and given heavy fines but after discussion with the owner of the sheep it was agreed that a police caution was the most appropriate punishment in this case.

"The dog owner is very apologetic and remorseful about what happened.

"She has said that she will never take her dog where there are sheep roaming wild again.

"We take reports of sheep worrying such as this extremely seriously as they can cause not only the deaths of animals but also upset to farmers and other residents who see the injuries that can be caused.

"Please keep your animals under control at all times so that incidents like this can be avoided."
