A DETECTIVE got more than he bargained for when he discovered £150,000 worth of drugs.

The officer was investigating a burglary in Lindfield Drive, Hailsham, and was in the middle of interviewing a couple about a stolen handbag when he noticed a man acting suspiciously in the garden.

After speaking to the man he arrested him on suspicion of burglary and went to investigate his flat.

There the policeman discovered 6kg of cocaine and 1kg of cannabis resin which Sussex Police estimate is worth more than £150,000.

The man, 44, was further arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of ecstasy and cannabis, and possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

It was also found there had been a fire in a cooker and a metal bin, leading to the man also being arrested for arson.

A woman, 28, was also arrested on suspicion of possessing amphetamine with intent to supply and being concerned in the supply of cocaine and cannabis.

Both suspects have been interviewed and released on bail until 1 September while enquiries continue.

Detective Inspector Mark O'Brien said: "The estimated street value of the drugs seized is in excess of £150,000 and we're delighted that they are now out of circulation."
