A RENOWNED writer has paid tribute to her “beloved son” who she revealed committed suicide.

Brighton-based journalist Julie Burchill spoke yesterday after her son Jack Landesman, a former BIMM student, killed himself earlier this week.

The 55-year-old author and columnist urged people to “look after the people you love” when she announced his death on her public Facebook page.

The musician was her second oldest son and his father was her second husband journalist Cosmo Landesman – who took custody of Jack when the pair separated in 1992.

The 29-year-old eventually moved back in with his mother.

She had previously described him in an interview as “the apple of my eye, my Achilles heel” and said losing custody of him was the “saddest day of my life”.

Ms Burchill said: “He is at peace now and in pain no longer and of course I don’t believe that life ends with death, so I am lucky.

“Look after the people you love, as I tried to and failed.

“Thank you for all your good wishes and offers of support, but I have my Dan, who was a wonderful stepfather to my poor boy for more than half of his life.”

After the touching tribute she posted two poems dedicated to her son – one entitled Son by the Russian poet Pavel Antokolsky, written after the death of his son in the Second World War,.

The other was The Little Boy Found by William Blake.

Mr Landesman studied at BIMM for a level 3 diploma in Bass in 2008/2009.

Vaseema Hamilton, principal of BIMM, said: “We are all really sorry to hear the sad news that former BIMM Brighton diploma student Jack Landesman has passed away.

“Our thoughts are with his parents Julie Burchill and Cosmo Landesman, as well as his friends and fellow students, at this incredibly difficult time.”

She added: “He was a very well liked young man and a talented musician, who went on to play with his uncle, Miles Davis Landesman.

“He will be sadly missed.”
