Three moped riders were chased by police after they began racing dangerously through a town centre.

One of them mounted the pavement in their attempted escape and hit a woman walking along. The 30-year-old was left with bruises.

The riders eventually abandoned their bikes and ran off.

The chase happened along busy Queen's Road in Hastings town centre at about 5.30pm on Wednesday, June 24.

The speeding riders were aware police were behind them and turned into Stone Street, which leads into Stonefield Road, before the pedestrian was involved.

After fleeing, all three mopeds were seized under Section 59 of the Road Traffic Act for being driven in a careless and reckless way.

Inspector Dan Russell, of the Hastings Neighbourhood Police Team, said: "The number of complaints about noisy mopeds and off-road bikes has increased of late.

"I am pleased that three more bikes have been seized as a result of positive police action.

"When a vehicle is impounded the registered owner has to pay a release fee, and for each day that the seized vehicle remains impounded a daily fee is added also. If the fees are not paid the vehicles will be crushed."
