Brighton collective The Go Team! displayed their thrillingly multi-faceted sound in a hometown gig that was by turns explosive and touching on Saturday night.

The presence of two energetic drummers allowed for a live replication of The Go! Team’s diverse approach on record, and the set was divided between lightning-quick bars from in-band rapper Ninja, thunderous instrumentals and melody-led pop songs.

Huddle Formation, Keys To The City and T.O.R.N.A.D.O saw Ninja at her untamed best, resembling a teenager in a moshpit as she delivered verse after punchy verse.

The band’s on-stage mannerisms befitted the hyperactivity of much of their music – founder and songwriter Ian Parton especially could often be found leaping into the air in a rock power stance. He delivered a tender moment too, through a beautiful harmonica rendition of Everyone’s A VIP To Someone.

It looked for a while like The Go! Team would fold after third album Rolling Blackouts, but Parton must have felt gratified for having persisted after witnessing the reaction to new record The Scene In Between’s pop gems – What D’you Say? and The Art Of Getting By in particular were performed pitch-perfectly by new vocalist Maki.

There are usually about four years between the group’s albums, so it’s anyone’s guess when we will see them play in Brighton again.

For now, though, Parton and company can reflect on a highly stimulating and satisfactory hometown show.
