LABOUR has retained the seat of former leader Jeremy Birch at both East Sussex and Hastings Borough elections.

In by-elections held yesterday, Labour candidate Tania Charman held the Old Hastings and Tressell Division seat on East Sussex County Council polling 961 of the 1,700 votes cast.

Terri Dowling also retained Mr Birch’s Central St Leonards seat on Hastings Borough Council.

Mr Birch died in May after collapsing in the street with a stroke.

Conservative candidate Martin Clarke held the St Helens ward on Hastings Borough Council vacated by the resignation of Matthew J Lock who remains on police bail on child sex offences.
