COUNCILLORS have unanimously rejected plans to cover five high-rises with yellow render.

Planning committee members agreed with Brighton and Hove City Council’s officers that mustard-coloured high-rises on the Clarendon estate in Hove would have a detrimental impact on the surrounding area.

Councillors complained about the “Star Trek” appearance of the “lumpy” silicon-based render proposed for the exterior of the ten-storey tower blocks and said they preferred the existing brick finish.

Concerns were also raised about the weathering of the render and worries that plans were currently only in place to clad some of the buildings on the estate with a phase two project to be completed at an undetermined later date.

Council officers said the work was necessary because parts of the 50-year-old building had come to the end of their useful life and residents were suffering from heat loss, high fuel bills, condensation and mould.

Opponents to the scheme described the planned £8 million project, which would have cost some leaseholders in excess of £20,000, as unnecessary with the buildings simply in need of some “TLC”.

It is the second time plans for the tower blocks have been rejected this year.
