A COUNCILLOR has warned that somebody will be killed if lorries continue to triple park at a busy junction.

Conservative councillor Dawn Barnett claims Brighton and Hove City Council is not taking action regarding the problem at the Grenadier Roundabout in Hangleton.

Vehicles delivering to the shops along West Way, including Tesco, are the main issue according to the councillor for Hangleton and Knoll.

Along with fellow councillors Tony Janio and Nick Lewry, she has asked the local authority to clamp down on rogue parkers but said she feels let down that nothing has been done.

Coun Barnett said: “It’s disgusting and it’s an accident waiting to happen – it’s a matter of time until someone is killed.

“We feel really let down by the council because all three of us have been banging on about it but nothing gets done.

“There has to be more enforcement up there.

“If you put a warden up there 24/7, they’d make their weekly wages in a day easily.

“That’s how bad the problem is.

“We’ve always had a problem up there, but now it’s getting worse.

“It’s such a busy junction and you’ve got lorries double parked and sometimes triple parked up there.

“They say they’ve driven their allotted time and have to have a break, so then they stay there and take it while they have a sandwich or a coffee.”

A spokeswoman for Tesco said the company is working with the council to resolve the problem.

She said: “We always try to be a good neighbour, and we are working with the council to address this matter.

“The council will paint the delivery bay to make it clear that it should be used for deliveries only, and we are working with our distribution team to revisit our delivery options.”

Coun Barnett accused the council of turning a blind eye to the problem, but a local authority spokesman said: “We do enforce double parking where there is no loading or unloading taking place. This applies citywide.

“Vehicles have the right under national legislation to double park while they unload and load.

“We were alerted to the double parking in Hangleton and our civil enforcement officers attended within 20 minutes but the vehicles had moved on and the obstruction cleared by the time we arrived.”
