THE creators of internationally renowned percussion sensation Stomp have been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Brighton.

Steve McNicholas (left) and Luke Cresswell (right) attended a ceremony at Brighton Dome yesterday where they were both named doctor of letters.

Here are some amazing facts behind the worldwide phenomenon.

1. The show has been performed more than 15,000 times in 43 countries to a combined audience of 14 million.

2. Creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas first worked together in 1981 as members of street band Pookiesnackenburger and theatre group Cliff Hanger.

3. Pookiesnackenburger produced the famous ‘Bins’ commercial for Heineken in 1986, which featured binmen performing with rubbish bins. The advert pre-dated the birth of Stomp by five years.

4. The original Stomp, featuring just seven performers, was previewed at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London and premiered at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.

5. Since their first performance in 1991 the group has gone through 30,000 brooms, 20,000 bins, 10,000 drumsticks and 25,000 litres of black paint.

6. Stomp was performed at the Academy Awards ceremony in March 1996 with a piece synchronized with classic film clips.

7. Luke Cresswell has worked as a session percussionist for artists such as Beats International, Elvis Costello and Bryan Ferry.

8. After the original three years tour which ran from 1991 to 1994, Stomp received an Olivier award nomination for Best Entertainment Award. They also went on to win the Best Choreography Award in a West End show.

9. The Stomp show has been performed with the characters from Sesame Street on their special Let’s Make Music.

10. Their IMAX movie Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey, featuring an international cast, was released in 2002 to critical acclaim and is still playing in cinemas today.

11. In celebration of 40 years of Brighton Festival, a symphonic version of Stomp was produced in 2006 titled Pandemonium: The Lost and Found Orchestra.

12. The first American touring production of Stomp started in 1995 and the cast went on to perform in Chile, Brazil, and South Korea.

13. Stomp was performed at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC as part of President Clinton’s Millennium celebrations.

14. The show has featured in adverts for products such as Coca-Cola, the American store Target and car brands Toyota and Seat.

15. The group created a series of short clips called Mr Frear’s Ears for children’s TV channel Nickelodeon.

16. Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas directed a public service announcement called Stomp Out Litter, which featured Stomp’s cast sweeping at iconic locations in New York.

17. Their Stomp Out Loud show opened in Las Vegas inside a $28 million theatre specially crafted for the production.

18. They performed at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012.

19. Entertainment Weekly included Stomp in its list of the 50 best plays and musicals from 1983 to 2008.

20. After their first run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York, the group won an Obie Award and Drama Desk Award for the Most Unique Theatre Experience.
