A £1 MILLION yacht club will be taken on its own dramatic sea journey en route to its new home.

Brighton Marina Yacht Club’s (BMYC) new floating home will undertake an eight-and-a-half hour journey across the marina today as it takes up its permanent position.

The new club is one of the largest floating buildings in the UK and is to move from the east side of the marina to its permanent moorings on the west side.

The facility has been paid for as part of an ongoing £250 million redevelopment which will see 850 new homes and seven new restaurants added to the marina.

The yacht club was forced to move as redevelopment work gathered pace with its former home now operating as a canteen for construction workers.

The new BYMC home will be fitted out and opened in September. The club will also be running a new series of its Club Class events which have introduced hundreds of local people of all ages and abilities to yacht racing over the years.

The new home has been created by Brunswick Developments, engineering firm Intermarine and Premier Marinas, who have provided the permanent mooring next to the marina boardwalk.

Stewart Henton, club member and architect behind the original concept, said the club had been in the same temporary site three times longer than its original five year target because of delays to the marina redevelopment.

He said over the years the club had moved around the marina occupying empty shops, offices and even an old iron ship until it rotted away and sank.

He added: “There is very limited land space available at the marina so when we were looking for somewhere to move to, we came up with the idea of a floating building.

“It will bring us closer to the water and so when it comes to Sunday race days when all the boats will be able to moor around the club it will create a fantastic atmosphere.

“It will be very exciting on the day, it’s not often you see a building move."

The club’s commodore Phil Thomas said the new home could help tap into the rising interest in sailing following Portsmouth’s recent hosting of the America’s Cup.

He added: “Brunswick Developments commitment to bringing this fabulous building to life is commendable, and Intermarine has pulled out all the stops to make it happen technically.”
