A busy city-centre square has been cordoned off as police continue to investigate a "major assault".

The incident is believed to have taken place in the early hours of Sunday morning, but detectives are still carrying out investigation work.

Karl Jones, owner of Moshimo sushi restaurant in the square, said: "They are being very closed mouth about what is happening, but we've been told police found a man who was in a pretty bad state, but he's not dead.

"Although at one stage apparently it was feared he would be.

"I was told then that we was conscious, thankfully.

"They [police] said it was a major assault."

Moshimo remains open for business as usual, but police are continuing with the investigation in the area.

They were called by the ambulance at 2.23am to reports of an assault.
