BATMAN may be best suited to prowling the streets of Gotham City but The Dark Knight is now winging his way to Brighton.

The costume worn by the Caped Crusader as he battled Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in the latest Batman trilogy, will be on show at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.

The armoured black bat suit will be on show as part of The Costume Games, a five day festival with a Japanese flavour celebrating costumed characters – running to celebrate the first weekend of the Rugby World Cup.

And the creators of the suit worn by the Batman in the 2012 film, which grossed $448 million, will be on hand at the Costume Clinic event as part of the festival.

The redesigned bat suit is a variant of the version first worn by Batman in the 2008 film The Dark Knight.

In the film Bruce Wayne, Batman’s millionaire playboy alter ego, decides to redesign his previous suit due to a lack of mobility when he is mauled by dogs while stopping the drug peddling criminal The Scarecrow.

In all Warner Brothers films prior to Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed hit, Batman’s iconic cowl was one fused piece.

This meant actors playing him had to move their whole body when they wanted to look in a different direction – giving Batman a very rigid and immobile look.

The new suit meant actor Christian Bale could turn his head with a motorcycle helmet inspired design.

The first bat suit put to film was a grey-looking cloth costume which featured in the 1940s serials produced by Columbia Pictures.

The costume was redesigned when Adam West took up the mantel in the 1960s. when the pointy ears were downsized and the cape shortened.

Adam West’s version of the vigilante remained the iconic image until 1989, when the character was re-imagined for film by Tim Burton and Michael Keaton – with an all black costume of moulded rubber to give the character a more serious edge.

This tone was lost when director Joel Schumacher picked up the film series in the 1990s.

The director made the character flashier with brighter colours, with the questionable addition of nipples to Batman’s chest piece.

Batman will once again hit our screens next year with Ben Affleck behind the mask in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – with a costume heavily inspired by the comics, with a bulky leather look.

The Dark Knight Rises bat suit will be on show in the fashion and style gallery at Brighton Museum from August 18 to September 20.
