AN ASHES winner is pushing back the boundaries by becoming the first female cricketer to be honoured on a cricket club’s Legends’ Lane.

England and Sussex star Sarah Taylor will make history when her name is unveiled in Legends’ Lane at Sussex County Cricket Club’s ground on Thursday.

The wicketkeeper-batswoman will join a host of Sussex past and present stars including Tony Greig, CB Fry, Matt Prior, John Snow and Mushtaq Ahmed to be honoured in this way.

The unveiling will take place just 24 hours before Taylor will take to the field with England at the County Ground in an Ashes T20 International.

The honour is reward for a successful career for the home-grown star who has scored more than 3,200 runs in One Day Internationals at an average of more than 40 since making her debut in 2006, just two years after her first start for Sussex.

She had already risen to national prominence even before her England debut when she and left-arm bowler Holly Colvin were selected for Brighton College’s first XI as teenagers.

Taylor was named the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2014 and the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

She said: “I feel really honoured to take my place in Legends Lane alongside cricketing heroes at Sussex such as Luke Wright, Imran Khan and Ted Dexter.

“The women’s game has been transformed since I first joined Sussex in 2004.

“I’m only 26 so I am looking forward to continuing my career at the highest level for many years to come.”

Graham Marley, chief executive of the Let’s Do Business Group which has sponsored the new mural, said: “Sarah is one of the greatest women cricketers of all time.

“I am delighted that the Let’s Do Business Group is sponsoring her well-deserved and most timely induction to Legends Lane.

“I am looking forward to seeing her in action later this week at Hove and hopefully cheering England on to victory.”

Tickets for the Natwest T20 International are available from just £1 for children and £5 for adults on Friday are available at sussexcricket.co.uk/womens-ashes.
