A WOMAN is in a critical condition in hospital with head and chest injuries after plunging from her fifth-floor balcony.
Emergency services were called to St John's Mount, a high-rise council block on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Carlton Hill in Brighton, at about 8.25pm on Wednesday.
They found a 51-year-old woman standing on a chair close to the balcony about 60ft up.
Despite police officers attempting to rescue her, she fell at about 9.40pm.
May Panayi, a 52-year-old freelance writer and author who lives opposite the block, told The Argus how she saw the woman fall.
Paramedics stabilised her before she was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
