Several birds were freed from netting at a railway bridge by a fire crew and animal rescue teams last night.

Following a call from a member of the public, Seahaven Bird Rescue went to New England Road railway bridge in Brighton with East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS).

About 14 feral pigeons were found behind the netting at about 1am with with no route of escape.

There were also several dead birds that had previously been trapped.

Due to the height of the netting, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service used an aerial platform to free the trapped birds.

The road was closed for a short period but traffic disruption was minimal.

Seahaven Bird Rescue said it had previously received calls to this location and that despite efforts to get the problem resolved the netting remained in a poor state of repair.

It has appealed for anyone with information about the netting to get in touch. Call 01273 652820.
