TWO guinea pigs were rescued from a flat fire this afternoon.
Fire crews were called to the third-floor flat in Chapel Road, Worthing, just after 1.10pm.
The blaze started in the kitchen, where it is thought some cooking utensils had been left on an electric cooker hob.
The occupiers were out at the time but firefighters managed to force their way into the flat.
Two fire engines and an aerial platform were sent to the scene and crews used breathing gear and a hose reel to put out the flames in an hour-long operation.
The two guinea pigs were rescued safely and are uninjured.
A spokeswoman said: "People should keep their cooking areas and cooker tops completely clear and, if the cookers are electric, turn them off at the wall.
"Thankfully, the property did have a working smoke detector, which meant the alarm was raised quickly."
