FOR many in Westminster Lord Denis Healey will be remembered for his distinctive eyebrows.

But for the people of Alfriston - the village which has been his home for at least 30 years - he will be remembered for his dented Mini and battered plimsolls.

Up until recently the former chancellor would drive around the pretty village in his bashed up motor and collect the papers in his old plimsolls.

Sheena Bajmaloo, owner of the Ye Olde Smugglers Lane Pub, in Waterloo Square, first met Lord Healey eight years ago.

Yesterday he told of a man who would "light up a room".

He said: "He used to come to all the village events and get involved. He was a really nice guy and always had a twinkle in his eye. He could be cheeky at times as well.

“He was very chatty and would often come down to the village to pick up his paper and then pop in and have a chat. He was very friendly and always had time for everyone.

“He was a lovely man and we’ll miss him.”

Despite his grand title, Lord Healey was very much a community man and was involved in a number of local groups.

In particular he was president of Seaford Photographic Society for about 25 years.

Remembering him yesterday chairman Steve Gardner spoke of his "warmth, friendship, commitment" and his love of photography.

He said: “His witty speeches at our prize giving evenings at the end of each year were very much enjoyed.

“Likewise his ability to provide a knowledgeable and appreciative speech at the opening of our annual exhibitions was always eagerly awaited and thoroughly appreciated.

“Lord Healey always insisted that we call him Denis and that is how he will be very fondly remembered along with the many conversations normally associated with a glass of red wine.

"He will be greatly missed by all our members. Denis’ memory will live on in many conversations for many years to come.”

Nick Beechey, Alfriston Parish Council chairman, also paid tribute describing him as "a much loved part of the community" adding: “On behalf of the council and the community, I would like to send our condolences to his family.

"He will be much missed."

Residents also took to the Alfriston Facebook page where a photograph of Lord Healey with one of his famous quotes was posted.

The accompanying message read: “Sending our thoughts and prayers this evening to the family and friends of former Labour chancellor and Alfriston resident Lord Denis Healey who passed away this morning.”

Lord Healey was 98.
