A NEW fitness craze combining running and mindfulness is taking Brighton by storm.

ChiRunning brings together jogging and the key principles of T’ai Chi such as relaxation and correct alignment to enabling anyone to get involved without fear of injury.

The first session was held in Brighton at Preston Park on September 26 with great success.

Among those taking part was first-time runner 51-year-old Cecilia Mendes from London and regular fitness fan Sarah Watts from Hove.

Gray Caws, instructor and director of ChiRunning UK, said: “It works for anyone regardless of age or fitness level, most people can be a runner if they have the right approach.

"The principles of ChiRunning relate to everyday life, not just running, helping you become a more centred and focused person.’’

Although based on the principles of T’ai Chi, participants do not need to know T’ai Chi.

The main focus is on relaxation, correct alignment and posture, landing with a midfoot strike and connecting the mind and body to prevent injury

Mr Caws is one of 14 ChiRunning instructors across the UK and Ireland.

He added: "The environment plays a large part in promoting an uplifting and enjoyable experience. Brighton's coastline and beautiful surrounding countryside certainly give good reason to get out there.’’

Ms Mendes had not exercised for three years after suffering from adrenal fatigue. However, after reading about the technique she decided to give it a go.

She said: "I emailed Gray, said I’m overweight and I’ve never run and he said ‘you’ll be fine’.

"Exercise has to be physical and mental and for me ChiRunning has that combination.’’

Ms Watts meanwhile attended the workshop in an attempt to enjoy her running more.

She said the technique is perfect for those who have had running injuries.

She added: "I think ChiRunning is brilliant for beginners who don’t necessarily have good body awareness.

"And the moment you start talking about injury prevention to people who run, they’re interested to hear about it.’’

Following the success of the session, Mr Caws is planning to hold another event in Brighton in the near future.
