A car crashed into a tree, leaving a seven-year-old girl hospitalised.

Police are looking for witnesses to the accident which happened on the A28 near the junction with Mill Terrace outside Carriers Farm in Northiam, near Rye, at 6.20am today.

A black Ford Fiesta had crashed into a tree. The driver, a 40-year-old woman from Northiam, did not suffer any injuries. Her front passenger, a 7-year-old girl from Northiam, suffered a severe cut to her head and was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

Two fire crews from Rye were called to the scene after it was reported that the occupants were trapped but when they arrived they had escaped. After shoring up the scene the crews left.

PC Ian Richardson said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard the collision."
