A POST Office will be shutting down despite a high profile campaign to save it.

The Western Road branch will merge with the Melville Road Post Office early next year despite two petitions totalling more than 7000 signatures and 400 responses to their consultation.

Residents teamed up with ward councillors and Hove MP Peter Kyle to try and save the at risk branch.

A spokesman for the Post Office said: "The number of customers using Western Road Crown Office has declined in recent years and the branch is no longer commercially sustainable.  The area is well served with Post Office branches.

"As well as Melville Road there are three other Post Office branches - Hove, Brighton and Blatchington Road less than a mile from Western Road all of which have capacity to manage increased customer footfall."
