A RECORD 72,000 spring bulbs have been planted at a castle.

Although the gates of Arundel Castle have now closed for the winter period, it is a busy time for the site's gardening team.

For the past two months the team have been busily planting the bulbs throughout the 40 acres of gardens and grounds.

They enlisted the help of the West Sussex Girl Guides, who turned up to help plant tulip bulbs in large Italianate terracotta pots.

This year’s selection includes 50 different types of tulips such as lilac time and purple prince, with 24 new varieties for next year.

The walled area of the gardens are expected to yield 30,000 tulips in vibrant colours this spring - the biggest display the castle has ever presented.

Martin Duncan, head gardener said: “The garden team has worked tirelessly to plant even more bulbs this year and it was great to have the Guides on hand to help."

Arundel Castle reopens on Good Friday, March 25.
