THERE were no backhanded compliments as winners were announced at a tennis awards ceremony.

Local heroes were honoured as part of the Tennis Sussex County awards ceremony at the American Express Community Stadium in Brighton.

Among them was Lyn Paterson of Brighton Parks, who won an outstanding achievement award for giving more than 50 years of service to tennis in the local area.

Gordon Lambourn of Seaford and Blatchington Lawn Tennis Club was named the Volunteer of the Year for Sussex for more than 30 years of service to the game.

Others awarded at the event on November 14 were youngsters from Preston Lawn Tennis Club, in Brighton, who won the Volunteer of the Year Junior category.

They are all now in the running to be awarded a national award, which could see them collect a £5,000 facility grant and a visit from a tennis legend.

Anne Clark, chairwoman of Tennis Sussex, said: “It is heartening to award those who put so much effort into offering great tennis opportunities for all.”
